If you read my About Me page, you might recall I am a recovering collector of little things turned into a hoarder of big things. What can I say, I enjoy shopping. More often than not, when I leave home, I’m returning with something; but not just one something, more like lots of little somethings. These days it’s things for the house, dish towels, vases, baskets, but my problem is rarely can I buy just one of something. I like balance, so two of everything makes sense to me. My other quandary is sometimes I buy things not knowing exactly where they will go. In my mind I need to have enough of them because heaven forbid I only buy one decorative tray and when I finally figure out what to do with them, I need three. So a girl like me buys four . . . and right now I’m using three of the four, so it worked out?
Anywho, I digress. Once I painted Ana’s dresser, I enjoyed the process and results so much I wanted to keep doing it. I began picking up small pieces of furniture, desks in particular, here and there to restore. Our living and dining rooms are filled with desks, their drawers fill the mudroom, all waiting for me to find the time and inspiration. Well this week, this piece lucked up.
Craigslist is one of my favorite places to treasure hunt. Not only are people sometimes looking to just get rid of things, but because it’s online I can check “inventory” every day for specific items. Believe it or not, what drew me to this piece was the legs. I have a habit of fixating on different areas, and at this particular time, I wanted a piece with spindle legs. I had a design idea in mind I wanted to try, so the hunt was on when I found this desk. This piece was crying for an update. Absolutely nothing wrong with it, just in need of a little TLC.
Of course I began by sanding, but for the first time, I also primed the desk.
Next I applied two coats of Behr Ultra Pure White.
In my mind, I was done. Drawer pulls I picked up from Anthropologie completed the look. Plain & Simple. It looked good, but it was boring. And if you know me, you know I don’t do boring. I also never wear black to a party. I mean really, what’s the point in going if you’re just going to blend in with the walls? A little color goes a long way and as it stood, that desk was in need of a little color. As usual, I looked to Pinterest for a little inspiration. Armed with ideas, I headed to Michael’s for a few items. Gotta admit to being so excited I completed all the stenciling that night.
Now, it had that little spark, that little something that made it stand out without being obnoxious. Almost Finished.
The final touch I wanted to add was fabric lined drawers. When I shop for furniture, I love finding lined drawers. They add an air of elegance and they weren’t hard to create. My fabric came from Joann’s and lucky me, it was on sale!
Here are a few pics from her glamour session I used for Etsy. What do you think?
